Anna I don’t understand the quiz number six. The motorway opened yesterday and today is open. Thanks for your explanation.

Hi Paolo, the ex. number 6 is: “There’s a new road to the motorway. ______________ it yesterday.”
The correct answer is “They opened” (simple past tense).
In Italian, we would say: “C’è una nuova strada per l’autostrada/ che porta all’autostrada. L’hanno aperta ieri”.
In English, when there are time expressions like “yesterday”, “last year”, “last month”, “3 days ago” etc., you must use the simple past tense instead of present perfect.
For example, you must use simple past in this sentence: “I called Mark 15 minutes ago.”
You can use present perfect in this kind of sentence: “I just called Mark.”
JUST, ALREADY, LATELY, RECENTLY, EVER, (NOT) YET, UNTIL NOW, UP TO NOW, SO FAR
SIMPLE PAST => periodo di tempo definito, concluso; informazioni che non hanno più effetto sul presente.
PRESENT PERFECT => periodo di tempo non ben definito, non concluso; notizie/informazioni recenti i cui effetti si fanno ancora sentire.
Spero di essere stata esauriente, se hai dubbi chiedi pure.
Buona giornata!
